In between game rounds, you can upgrade your various stations, such as the orange juice machine, the donut display, and the burger grill. With each upgrade, each station takes a shorter time to produce the product or has a higher capacity, much of the time. But with every upgrade, the amount of coins earned per item served increases, making it easier to earn all of the stars for a level.

You have a number of quests to complete at a time, each of which involves fixing up the diner somehow, whether it’s painting it, cleaning up trash, or renovating the outside. You don’t have to spend coins for any of them; they cost stars. So you have to earn stars in order to do anything with the diner, but you won’t have to spend any coins.

You earn a lot of points if you are able to match the customers’ clothes with the color of their seats. Sometimes a group of customers have different colored clothing on, but even if you just match one color with a seat, you earn extra points.

After you have seated your customers, it is important to be able to do more than one thing at a time. You need to “chain” your actions so you can earn as many points as possible. A way to do this is by first seating all the customers, after that take all their orders and serve them all their food at the same time. One last thing to remember is that different customers have different moods. Some customers are patient and will wait for their order, others want to be served faster. I was pleasantly surprised by the graphics and sound effects in Diner Dash. The graphics and artwork are in a cartoonish style, which fits the whole theme of time management game. The sound effects and soundtrack fit very well together. The mechanics of Diner Dash also works pretty well too. When you start the game for the first time, you will be helped out with a small tutorial. The tutorial shows you the ins and outs of the game and helps you on your way. The gameplay itself is pretty easier and straight forward, even so that a casual mobile gamer could get into this game with ease. What I found very nice was the fact that during your gameplay in a level, Flo, the customers and even the chef have little idle animations, which really add a nice atmosphere to the game. After you have played and completed a couple of levels, you will have enough dinero to buy new kitchen appliances such as a coffee machine, to keep your customers happy at all times.

I had a few bad experiences with Diner Dash itself. While the game is a great time killer and is actually pretty entertaining, this gets ruined by having an energy bar with only three energy bolts. You can only play three levels at a time and after that you need to wait an hour and a half for your energy bar to refill. You can spend in-game currency to fill up your energy bar but if you are out of currency, you are out of luck. You either need to pay real money to get more in-game currency or you need to ask your Facebook friends to spare you some free bolts.

I think it is normal that free-to-play games have an in-game store and advertisements, but Diner Dash takes the cake with this one. After you complete a couple of levels, you will face a video advertisement which most of the time you can’t even skip. This really disturbed me as I had to sit and look at a twenty seconds long video in order to just simply play more Diner Dash. This was a very big turn off from the game for me and I have no doubt for many others as well.

A last negative aspect would be that many appliances become very expensive to buy and to upgrade in late game. This is kind of like the developers of this game want to force you into buying in-game currency to further your gameplay. Like I stated before, I do not mind if a free-to-play game has an in-game store, but you simply cannot expect everyone to buy some currency with real money, in order to be able to progress through the game.

Artwork: I give Diner Dash an 8/10 for its artwork. The artwork is cartoonish which is really nice. Even though it is cartoonish, the characters and environment are clear and detailed. The colors that are used are cheerful and fits the theme. Even the customers and the chef makes idle movements which is a nice touch to the game.

Music & SFX: I give Diner Dash a 7/10 for its music and SFX. Just like the artwork, the music and SFX are cartoonish and very fitting to the theme. The world map soundtrack is mysterious and thrilling. The SFX in the level itself are clear and are easy on the ears.

Story & Originality: I give the game a 6/10 for its story and originality. Games such as Diner Dash are just hashed out ideas that are being used over and over again. You can see maybe a dozen more games such as Diner Dash in the app stores. Diner Dash did take this idea and brought it to a new level. There is a story behind the game and therefor even if it the game idea is not original, the store still makes up for it.

General Gameplay: I give the game an 8/10 for general gameplay. You get a nice little tutorial at the beginning of your gameplay, which explains everything nicely. Every level of the game has a different goal which you need to complete. The game mechanics work well and movements are easy to follow, even on a small smartphone screen. You can connect with your Facebook friends and compete for the highest score if you like the challenge.

Addictiveness: I give Diner Dash a 6/10 for addictiveness. Even though Diner Dash feels like it is a time killer game, sometimes it does suck you in. You want to get better, earn more coins, buy nice appliances for your kitchen etc. It is a shame you only have three energy bolts which kind of blocks your progress if you do not spend real money on the game. You either have to wait ninety minutes for your three energy bolts to replenish or you need to replenish them with dinero or coins.
