Lego: The Hobbit is a game based on a children’s toy based on a movie based on a book based on a series of stories an author told his children. That’s like, as licensed as a licensed property could possibly be. So I’d forgive you if you immediately thought that Lego: The Hobbit was going to be a quick cash in on the Lord of the Rings fervor. However, it’s still a pretty cool game in its own right, bringing some new twists to the Lego franchise, and letting us hear Benedict Cumberbatch’s sexy dragon voice once again.

For those of you who have never played a Lego videogame before, the basic formula is this: you take control of Lego versions of some of the most iconic characters in any given licensed IP, and guide them through some pretty basic action stages. Your basic goals are to attack enemies, collect Lego blocks and chits, and re-enact some of the most iconic scenes from your IP of choice, with a bit of a humorous twist to them. Each character has his own unique attack and movement abilities, which are used to solve tiny puzzles that break up the simple fighting and platforming. You can usually either use these abilities to scour every level for secrets, or simply blast through the game until you reach the end, depending on the type of gamer you are.

Don’t go thinking that Lego: The Hobbit is a big departure from this formula. If you’ve played a Lego game before, you know what to expect here. That doesn’t mean it’s not fun though. The abilities of each individual character are interesting and diverse, and there are plenty of characters to choose from, what with all of these dwarves running around. You’ll break through barriers, make human ladders, dismantle objects, and mine for loot with each individual character. That being said, some of the puzzles in the game do feel a bit re-used. You’ll encounter a lot of “there’s a thing that needs to be broken, find the person who can break it” puzzles, as opposed to other Lego games that mixed it up a bit more with special jumps and similar movement abilities.

Loot itself is perhaps the most unique gameplay element in The Hobbit. By mining loot, you can then use this loot to put together your own Lego items. The most notable of these items are new weapons and equipment for the characters, which gives Lego: The Hobbit a bit of an RPG sort of feel… or even better/worse… Minecraft. You can lose yourself for hours looking for the right pieces to build the right items, and this does actually facilitate a sort of grindy replay value that some gamers will really be into. There are a lot of other items you can build with loot, other than just equipment, and completionists will not likely rest until they have built them all, which can take you an incredible amount of time. I’ve played the game for hours and I still haven’t built even a fraction of the items that are available.

Other than that, the real draw of the game is the ability to travel all around Middle Earth in Lego style. The game includes nearly every locale from the first two movies. You’ll fool around in Hobbiton, fight Goblins on scaffolding, plumb the depths of the ancient Dwarven kingdoms underneath the Lonely Mountain, and more. The whole game is connected together in an open world style, with new locales opening up as the game progresses. So while you can’t experience everything right at the beginning, you can sort of run around and just explore Middle Earth by the end, and this is kind of satisfying. Other Lord of the Rings games tend to be too big to really get an appreciation for Middle Earth’s layout, but Lego: The Hobbit is just the right size.

The tone of Lego: The Hobbit is perfect as well. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is honestly something the actual movies could stand to mimic. Characters interact with each other in cartoony ways, each an exaggerated caricature of their actual personality. When Bilbo Baggins is terrified, he shakes like a trembling mouse. Meanwhile, the dwarves around him stomp around with intense bravado and jubilation. It’s not quite how the characters are actually portrayed in the movie, but it still feels faithful to the characters themselves. Heck, I even prefer Lego: The Hobbit’s version of the Goblin King, if only so that I don’t have to look at his floppy tumor sack of a beard… ugh.

• Easy 'Bro's before Gold' achievement

Play 'The Battle of Azanulbizar', which is the second part of 'Azog the Defiler', in Free Play mode. Progress until a troll drags in the second tower. Defeat the troll, however do not break the broken section on the tower. An endless amount of enemies will spawn, allowing time to get the required number of Buddy-Up attacks.

• Easy 'Conjurer of Cheap Tricks' achievement

Play 'The Battle of Azanulbizar', which is the second part of 'Azog the Defiler', in Free Play mode. Progress until a troll drags in the second tower. Defeat the troll, however do not break the broken section on the tower. An endless amount of enemies will spawn, allowing lots of time to get the required number of dazzled enemies. To use the Dazzle ability, hold down the appropriate button or key until the meter is full, then release. Repeat the process as many times as needed. It also helps having the Invincibility red brick active, to avoid getting killed during the process.

• Easy 'Team Building' achievement

Play 'The Battle of Azanulbizar', which is the second part of 'Azog the Defiler', in Free Play mode. Progress until a troll drags in the second tower. Defeat the troll, however do not break the broken section on the tower. An endless amount of enemies will spawn, allowing lots of time to use every dwarf in a Buddy-Up attack. Note: The easiest way to complete this is to use a static player as player two while rotating the dwarves as player one. Consider setting regular Thorin as player two, since his name is last in alphabetical order. Then rotate in Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Gloin, Nori, Oin, and Ori (all regular/current age) as player one. Each dwarf is conveniently next to each other at the 'Character Select' menu. End by using Thorin (Lake-town) with the regular Thorin to complete the task. Note: Make sure you get a complete kill with each combo before moving onto the next character. It also helps having the Invincibility red brick active, to avoid getting killed while rotating characters.

• Easy 'That's Why We Need A Burglar!' achievement

To easily obtain the 'Master Burglar' title in all levels and get the 'That's Why We Need A Burglar!' achievement, unlock and activate at least the x2 and/or x4 stud multiplier. Then, go to any level, and collect studs to easily obtain enough studs in that level to get the 'Master Burglar' title. Repeat this in all levels to get the 'That's Why We Need A Burglar!' achievement. • Easy 'Unequalled skill of the Dwarves' achievement

Mithril Treasure Items can be crafted at the Blacksmith in Bree. When forging any item there, two rings will appear, one inside the other. There will be with letters or controller buttons floating toward the center which you must press as they enter the rings. In order to make a Perfect Mithril Treasure Item, you must push each button or key as it floats over or within the inner ring. Do not worry if you make a mistake. Once you create a Mithril Treasure item, it will remain unlocked and can be reforged for free.

• Easy 'Who is this horrid creature?' achievement

Shape a horse or a warg. This can be done in Beorn's house after completing the 'Queer Lodgings' chapter. Inside is a barn. Select an animal and change its color.

• Easy studs

First, unlock and activate as many stud multipliers as possible. Then, travel to Bree to find two purple studs (worth 10,000 each at x1 multiplier) in the center square of town, and collect them. After collecting the purple studs, enter the nearby interior shop, and then go back outside to make the purple studs respawn. Repeat this process as many times as desired. If you have unlocked and activated all five stud multipliers, you will earn 38,400,000 studs for each purple stud collected.

• Infinite loot

Fast travel to Hobbiton. When you arrive, select 'Bofur' as your character. Then, follow the river east until you see a box full of bread on the right. Destroy the box, and collect the wood and bread. Next, go straight through the fence to reach a small cave that contains random loot that can be mined. The random loot can be gold, silver, copper, iron, sapphire, ruby, emerald, diamond, or stone. After collecting the loot in the small cave, turn left to see a box of fish next to the bridge. Destroy the box of fish, and collect the items. After collecting the loot, pause the game, select 'View Map', and choose to fast travel to Hobbiton again. All loot will respawn. Repeat this process as many times as desired. This trick allows you to obtain enough loot to forge all the weapons and tools in the game.
Fast travel to Esgaroth, and go to the tower on the far right. Stand in the tower for two seconds to make this area your save location. Then, collect the nearby sapphire, ruby, emerald, and diamond. After collecting the loot, pause the game, select the 'View Map' option, and choose to fast travel to Mirkwood. When the eagle drops you off, hold Up on the Left Analog-stick to cause your character to fall into the water. You will then respawn back at the tower in Esgaroth. Repeat this process as many times as desired.

• Sauron

At the 'Pause' menu select 'Extras' followed by 'Enter Code'. Then use the D-pad to enter the code OARA3D to unlock Sauron.
